The artery transitions posterior to enter the foramen transversarium in the posterolateral part of the ring of the atlas. It continues posterior through the atlantoaxial membrane to enter the foramen magnum where it combines with the contralateral VA to form the basilar artery providing the blood supply to the brain stem and cerebellum [4].

Usefulness of Intraoperative Monitoring during Microsurgical Decompression of Cervicomedullary Compression Caused by an Anomalous Vertebral Artery
We report a case of cervicomedullary compression by an anomalous vertebral artery treated using microsurgical decompression with intraoperative monitoring. A 68-year-old woman presented with posterior neck pain and gait disturbance. MRI revealed multiple abnormalities, including an anomalous vertebral artery that compressed the spinal cord at the cervicomedullary junction. Suboccipital craniect...
متن کاملPartial subclavian steal syndrome in a congenitally anomalous subclavian artery
patients are asymptomatic.1 The syndrome of subclavian steal caused by an occlusive lesion of the aberrant subclavian artery is a rare clinical finding.1-4 This syndrome results from the abnormal flow of blood due to the occlusion in the subclavian artery proximal to the origin of the vertebral artery. Blood flow through the vertebral artery is consequently reversed and the subclavian one thus ...
متن کاملVertebral Artery Anomalies at the Craniovertebral Junction: A Case Report and Review of the Literature
Study Design Case report. Objective The objective of this study was to report a case of an unstable C1 burst fracture in the setting of a vertebral artery anomaly at the craniovertebral junction. Methods A 55-year-old man was admitted to the hospital with severe neck pain after falling approximately 15 feet and landing on his head. Computed tomography scan of the cervical spine revealed an unst...
متن کاملRecurrent posterior circulation infarction caused by anomalous occipital bony process in a young patient
BACKGROUND Structural anomaly of the cervical spine or craniocervical junction has been reported as one of the rare causes of ischemic stroke. We report a case of a young patient with recurrent posterior circulation infarction that may have been associated with an anomalous occipital bony process compressing the vertebral artery. CASE PRESENTATION A 23-year-old man experienced recurrent poste...
متن کاملIntracranial Vertebral Artery Dissection Presenting with Isolated Trigeminal Neuralgia-like Facial Pain
Headache often accompanies intracranial vertebral artery dissection (IVAD), and infrequently, it is the only symptom. Furthermore, IVAD presenting with isolated facial pain is rarer. Ischemia of the spinothalamic tract caused by IVAD is considered as the cause of facial pain. We present a case of intracranial vertebral artery dissection with trigeminal neuralgia-like facial pain which was succe...
